Three spots chosen with care, from the seasoning and textures to spaces that encourage conversation

Dining with your parents takes more than just picking a delicious menu. You find yourself wondering whether the food might be too heavily seasoned, and whether everyone can comfortably enjoy each bite while keeping the conversation going. Rather than a flashy spread, I find myself remembering a meal where we could eat comfortably from start to finish without breaking the flow of conversation for much longer.
There are days when you want to enjoy the calm cadence of a course-style hanjeongsik, and other days when you crave wrapping sashimi in seaweed or sitting down before a clear, warm bowl of gomtang. I have picked out three dining tables around Gangnam Station where both the flavors of the food and the overall mood of the meal felt just right.
Daonjeong
A place where gently seasoned hanjeongsik and courses paced to your dining speed felt wonderfully comfortable

Conversation flowed naturally as each dish was brought out
The courses arrived in smooth succession, and I appreciated that dishes neither stalled nor piled up all at once. Because the next plate followed the pace at which we ate, we could easily keep our meal going while continuing our conversation. When sitting down with my parents, I prefer this kind of natural rhythm—leaving room to share our own stories—over being kept busy trying to keep up with dish explanations.
I also liked that everything from the appetizers to the final meal was gently seasoned, letting the natural flavors of the ingredients linger. Even after going through several plates, it never felt as though a single heavy sauce overpowered the palate. On days when I take my parents out, whether they can dine comfortably all the way through comes to mind long before trying to show them lots of novel dishes.

A meal feels truly complete only after following the galbi with pot-cooked rice
The combination of the galbi dish and the pot-cooked rice was memorable enough to crave again. The side dishes were also appealing enough that you naturally reached for each one, which felt distinct from a meal where you merely finish the main dish and call it done. When I eat hanjeongsik, if the finishing rice is underwhelming, the preceding dishes tend to fade a bit; here, however, the meal transitioned deliciously right to the end, leaving me with the feeling of having been treated to a proper feast.

The feeling of dining privately among ourselves in a quiet room
The private room made it easy for our family to talk among ourselves. The tranquil atmosphere and attentive service also paired seamlessly with the neat refinement of the food. Rather than a meal where everyone stays tense just because it is an important occasion, I much preferred a setting where my parents could speak comfortably and I could enjoy the food as well.
The reason Daonjeong comes to mind on days when you want an unhurried meal is not simply because it serves many courses. It is because the mild, unburdensome food and the easy setting for conversation linger together in memory. It is a place I would choose on days when I want to savor galbi, side dishes, and pot-cooked rice as a complete meal.

A Namdo-style table where the fun of wrapping sashimi in seaweed leads into warm fish dishes

Even a single piece of sashimi tasted different depending on what you wrapped it in
I enjoyed the style of placing the bone-in raw fish (sekkosi) atop sea mustard or seaweed. When you add perilla leaves, toasted seaweed, and ssamjang, you find yourself switching up combinations for the very same sashimi. When dining with parents who love seafood, I welcome a table like this—where everyone can enjoy each bite according to their own preference—far more than rushing to clear a single platter.
The assorted sashimi left a pleasantly chewy texture, and the soy-marinated crab had a savory depth rather than just harsh saltiness, pairing wonderfully with rice. Haedamchae is a place my heart turns to on days when, rather than just eating raw fish continuously, I want to enjoy seafood together with rice and banchan.

The pleasure of pairing crispy fish and braised dishes with rice
The fried fish was easy to eat because the staff prepared it for us, and the sauce complemented its crispy texture nicely. The braised mackerel with kimchi and the smoky stir-fried webfoot octopus were even more satisfying when eaten with rice. Moving from chilled sashimi to warm dishes added a welcome variety that kept the meal from feeling monotonous.

Remembering both the comfort of the private room and the nuances of the service
Eating in a cozy, tidy private room made the mood of our family gathering feel noticeably calmer. During a meal with parents, it was also wonderful that the food felt well seasoned and the spread felt substantial. I think of Haedamchae on days when I want to treat family members who love ocean flavors to a diverse range of tastes.
Still, just because the room was comfortable does not mean service speed will always be identical. During busy hours, waiting after ringing the call bell felt long, and I have had moments where dish maintenance was a bit lacking. Keeping those aspects in mind alongside the fond memories of the food and space, I would want to set aside plenty of time for the meal.

Geumnyeong Gomtang Yeoksam Branch
For days when you crave a bowl of clear broth and tender meat over multiple courses

It may look clear, but the broth flavor was by no means light
The gomtang had a clear yet deep flavor rather than a milky broth. The beef carried no unpleasant gaminess and the broth was refreshing, so the satisfaction of eating a single bowl was unmistakable. I still remember how generous the portions were and how good the broth tasted when eating together with my parents.
The water parsley gomtang paired fragrant water parsley with tender Korean beef wonderfully. There was also the charm of discovering sliced rice cakes alongside the comforting taste of broth-infused rice from the toryeom technique. I do not believe a meal has to present a multitude of dishes to feel like a proper treat. When the rice, meat, and broth all hit the mark, a single bowl is more than hearty enough.

Because the side dishes were delicious, the rice went down even better
Rather than a spread limited to kimchi, there was a diverse selection of self-serve side dishes like seasoned perilla leaves, dried radish strips, and simmered black soybeans. Alternating between the broth, beef, and side dishes kept each bowl from feeling monotonous. A meal with my parents combining gomtang and water parsley gomtang with seasoned raw pollock was thoroughly satisfying right from the banchan.

A place you want to bring them to comfortably, even without a major occasion
The restaurant was spacious and clean, and the warm, welcoming greeting was pleasant. I feel that getting together with your parents does not always require a birthday or an anniversary. On days when you simply want to enjoy warm gomtang and rice deliciously rather than choosing multi-course meals, a restaurant like this comes to mind with ease.

If you wish to chat quietly along the gentle pace of course dining, I would choose Daonjeong; if you want to enjoy a variety of ocean flavors ranging from seaweed wraps to warm fish dishes, I would pick Haedamchae. On days when a clear broth and a bowl of rice appeal more than multiple dishes, Geumnyeong Gomtang suits the occasion well.
Eating at an unhurried pace with parents felt slightly different from simply sitting for a long time. For me, a meal where we chose flavors they enjoy and carried on our conversation while dining comfortably, one bite at a time, was far more meaningful.
